Bob Jones University Opens Renovated Dining Common


Paul and Cheryl Kalmbach join Dr. Stephen Jones for the ribbon cutting to open the newly renovated Kalmbach Room in the Dixon-McKenzie Dining Common on the Bob Jones University campus. The room was named in honor of Paul’s parents, the late Milton and Ruth Kalmbach of Ohio.

Greenville, S.C. (August 29, 2013) – Dr. Stephen Jones, president of Bob Jones University, today reopened the renovated student dining room of the Dixon-McKenzie Dining Common—the major dining facility on the BJU campus.

Joined by representatives of the University family, contractors and city, county and state officials, Jones recognized donors and several individuals who played key roles in the nearly $6 million renovation project. Following the brief program, attendees enjoyed lunch in the newly-renovated facilities.

Dr. Jones also renamed the main dining room the Kalmbach Room in honor of the late Milton and Ruth Kalmbach of Ohio who loved BJU and what it stood for. “They would be most pleased to know their legacy includes supporting a University whose goals match the faith for which they lived,” says their son, Paul Kalmbach.

“My main goal for the project,” says Dr. Jones, “is to enhance our mission of student discipleship—to create a venue conducive to intentional faculty-to-student and student-to-student mentoring and discipleship and to student socialization. Additionally, I want to give our students a great dining experience by increasing food variety and healthy options as well as extended dining hours.”

Since early May, the main student dining room—which is approximately the size of a football field—has been totally gutted, equipped with a variety of food stations and new furniture, and totally redecorated.  This follows three summers of infrastructure work to prepare the building for the interior renovation.

To increase energy efficiency, new heating and air conditioning systems and state-of-the-art Prescolite Megalum high output LED down lights were installed. This lighting installation is one of the first installations which utilizes heat pipe technology from the computer and space industry to dissipate heat from the lighting. Lights have a 60,000 hour life which equates to almost 15 years of use for 12 hours daily.

Choate Construction Company of Charlotte, N.C. served as general contractor.

The facility opens to the entire university family Friday, Aug. 30.

BJU Bruins Women’s Soccer Team Ranked #10 In The Country

Greenville, S.C. (August 27, 2013) – The National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) released their 2013 preseason rankings and  the Bob Jones University Bruins women’s soccer team was ranked #10 in the country in Division II of the NCCAA.

“The ranking is a reward for all the hard work we put in last season,” Coach Chris Carmichael said. “Although the team is very self-motivated, this will give them an extra measure of confidence. Now that we are ranked in the top ten, certain expectations are going to come with that ranking and we need to push ourselves to be better on the field.”

The Bruins women kickoff their regular season Saturday night as they welcome Emmanuel College to Alumni Stadium at 7 p.m. The squad finished 7-10 this past season but showed great improvement throughout their inaugural season. The Bruins had a five-game winning streak in the middle of the season, and during that time the Bruins outscored their opponents 31-2. The team hopes to build on the success from last year and progress further into the postseason tournament.

“We have to look at the whole season,” Coach Carmichael said. “This ranking gives us a benchmark to be able to work hard. It lets us know where we stand and will motivate us to work harder.”

The Bruins men will continue to compete in Division I of the NCCAA and the Bruins women will compete in Division II.  The BJU Bruins, now in their second year of intercollegiate competition, compete in soccer, basketball, cross country and golf.


BJU Graduate Named to Ohio Right to Life Staff

LauraBethKirsopGreenville, S.C. (August 27, 2013) – Laura Beth Kirsop was recently named as Director of Communications for Ohio Right to Life, the state affiliate of the National Right to Life Committee.

Kirsop received her MA in Organizational Communication from Bob Jones University in 2013.

She will be responsible for overseeing all internal and external communications, media relations and event coordinating.

“I am deeply honored to become part of the dedicated staff at Ohio Right to Life,” said Kirsop. “I enthusiastically look forward to fighting to save and to preserve innocent life with such a passionate team of talented individuals.”

Founded in 1967, Ohio Right to Life, with more than 45 local chapters, is Ohio’s oldest and largest grassroots pro-life organization.

Bob Jones Academy Implements Flipped Classrooms for Ninth Grade Students

Bob Jones Acadmy high school ipadsGreenville, S.C. (August 22, 2013) –  Ninth grade students are seeing big changes at Bob Jones Academy as teachers introduce iPads and flipped classrooms for all core classes this year.

After a small pilot study last year, BJA is now conducting a larger evaluation of the use of iPads and the flipped classroom methodology where all students enrolled in core 9th-grade classes – Algebra I, English 9, Physical Science, World Geography and World History – will use an iPad with eTextbooks installed.

In a flipped classroom, students watch lectures at home and work with the teacher on practice and application of concepts during the class hour. The iPad enables students to watch lectures at home, take quizzes online during class and use its other features to enhance learning.

Core content for the classes remains the same. This technology will allow teachers to implement the flipped classroom differently and no two flipped classrooms will look the same.

Teachers hope to increase interaction with students as they develop more effective use of technology.


Bruins Foundation to Support University Athletics

Greenville, S.C. (August 15, 2013) – Bob Jones University’s Department of Athletics recently announced the formation of the Bruins Foundation —a tax-exempt organization dedicated to fulfilling the University’s mission through athletics. For the first time, contributions toward Bruins athletics, including membership in the Bruins Booster Club, are tax-deductible.

All support raised will benefit both intramural and intercollegiate athletics and will go toward efforts such as athletics facilities, team travel, community outreach, technology upgrades, expansion of recreational sporting opportunities for the university community and even short-term missions opportunities.

Athletics play an integral role in fulfilling BJU’s focus on educating the whole person, in promoting school unity, and in shepherding the next generation of Christian leaders.

LaPierre Joins A.T. Locke

Ryan LaPierre has joined AT LOCKEGreenville, S.C. (August 13, 2013) – Upstate-based A.T. Locke, which provides accounting services, business analysis and financial and strategic guidance to emerging and mid-sized organizations, has added Ryan LaPierre to the firm’s rapidly-growing team.

Mr. LaPierre joins A.T. LOCKE after working for nearly six years with a regional accounting firm where he provided accounting, tax and audit services to individuals and organizations across industries including automotive, energy and not-for-profit.  A 2007 graduate of Bob Jones University, he holds a BS in Accounting.

LaPierre will serve A.T. LOCKE clients as an Accounting Analyst, providing accounting and analytical support to help clients manage the profitable growth of their organizations.  He currently resides in Travelers Rest.

Minnick Wins Awards at Australian Music Competition

Daniel MinnickGreenville, S.C. (August 8, 2013) – Daniel Minnick, a resident of Cardwell, Australia and a 2013 graduate of Bob Jones University, recently received an Honorable Mention in the Australian Concerto and Vocal Competition, a national competition open to international competitors.

In addition, he received an Encouragement Award titled “Most Promising Pianist” and a cash prize.  He played the first movement of Beethoven’s “Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major.”

Minnick, who received his BMus in Piano Performance in May, is now pursuing a MMus in Church Music (piano principal) at BJU.

Bob Jones University Hosts National Hoops Ministries Tournament

NHM0813Greenville, S.C. (August 8, 2013) – Bob Jones University, in partnership with National Hoops Ministries (NHM), is hosting a national 3-on-3 basketball tournament this week on the BJU campus.

Players from across the country are participating in the tournament camp and BJU Bruin coaches and players are serving as counselors and assistants to the NHM staff.  With daily skills sessions, chapel and 3-on-3 tournaments, players are able to develop both basketball and life skills.

“We promote using sports as a platform for ministry and this camp is a practical application of our mission,” Bruins’ Athletics Director and men’s basketball coach Neal Ring said. “I believe in the model National Hoops follows.”

Mike Washer, a 1999 graduate of BJU, started National Hoops Ministries (NHM) through his church in Spartanburg.  The church would host a 3-on-3 basketball tournament each year where participants would compete with the eventual prize being a trip to the NBA All-Star Game festivities. Participants are also given the Gospel through devotionals and one-on-one interaction.

“Basketball is just a simple tool,” said Washer. “The ministry is not about basketball, but about Christ – and seeing needy souls come to know Him.”

As the tournament’s popularity grew, many recommended taking this unique ministry “on the road.” NHM began as a small-town event in Spartanburg and has become a nationwide tournament with dozens of teams.

“My hope is that we all grow in our passion to use sports as a platform for ministry,” Ring said. “I pray we experience God’s blessing and see young men whose lives are being impacted through this ministry make a difference on their teams and in their communities.”

Members of the community are welcome to attend a special Friday night “showcase” in which players will compete in a skills competition, 3-point shooting contest as well as the 3-on-3 championship. The festivities begin at 7 p.m.  in the Davis Field House on the BJU campus. There is no charge for the event.

BJU Engineering Program Earns ABET Accreditation

Greenville, S.C.  (August 7, 2013) – The bachelor’s degree program in engineering at Bob Jones University has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, the recognized accreditor of college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology.  ABET has set the higher-educational standards in its fields for nearly 80 years and ABET accreditation demonstrates a program’s commitment to providing its students with a quality education.

“We’ve worked hard to earn this specialized accreditation,” said Dr. Bill Lovegrove, head of BJU’s Department of Physics and Engineering. “ABET accreditation will assist our graduates as they seek employment and licensure across the nation.”

Accreditation is a voluntary, peer-review process that requires programs to undergo comprehensive, periodic evaluations.  The evaluations, conducted by teams of volunteer professionals working in industry, government, academe, and private practice within the ABET disciplines focus on program curricula, faculty, facilities, institutional support, and other important areas.

One of the key elements of ABET accreditation is the requirement programs continuously improve the quality of education provided.  As part of this continuous improvement requirement, programs set specific, measurable goals for their students and graduates, assess their success at reaching those goals, and improve their programs based on results of their assessment.

In addition to providing colleges and universities a structured mechanism to assess, evaluate, and improve their programs, accreditation helps students and their parents choose quality college programs, enables employers and graduate schools to recruit graduates they know are well-prepared, and assists registration, licensure, and certification boards in screening applicants.

BJU Students Participate in Missions Trip to Australia

Greenville, S.C. (August 7, 2013) – BJUAustraliaTeamSeven Bob Jones University students traveled to Australia for a mission trip June 1-July 30.  The team, led by BJU Science Division chairman George Matzko and his wife, Darlene, ministered at nine churches and a camp in Queensland and New South Wales. 

The team members assisted in church services and various outreaches (nursing homes, youth groups, Bible/Science seminars, concerts, VBS, after-school Bible clubs, readers’ theatre, religious education classes in public schools, as well as preparing a camp facility for two weeks of winter camp where they served as cabin leaders and operational staff.

Deb Dahlhausen, a sophomore Special Education major from Easley, S.C.,summed up her participation on the team this way, “This summer has been the best, most challenging, eye-opening experience of my life.  I didn’t realize how life changing it would be.”

Anne Marie Becker, a graduate Piano Pedagogy major from Greenville, S.C., adds, “The biggest thing the Lord taught me is to have faith that He will help me accomplish what He’s given me to do.  I learned when I think, “I can’t do that” I’m actually not believing God is powerful enough, good enough, or sufficient to help me.”

“A major part of our job as team leaders,” said Dr. George Matzko , “is to ensure that the students think and journal about the experiences they have had in Australia.  An unreflected experience is a lost experience.”

Beginning in 1996, BJU has sent a missions team to Australia and the Matzko’s have led the team each year. Prior to their service in Australia, the Matzko’s led a team to Nova Scotia for nine years.
