Aleithia Sass Participates in BJU Research Immersion for Undergraduates Program

Aleithia Sass

GREENVILLE, S.C. (August 8, 2017) – Aleithia Sass, a senior biochemistry and molecular biology major at Bob Jones University, participates this summer in the BJU Research Immersions for Undergraduates (RIU) program in the Department of Chemistry and Physics.

Directed by Dr. Robert Lee of the BJU chemistry faculty, this research program is conducted in collaboration with Cayman Chemical, a company headquartered in Ann Arbor, Michigan, that produces pharmaceutical ingredients and products for forensic science and biomedical research.

Sass, a resident of Antigo, Wisconsin, works to synthesize an anti-viral compound that may be useful in combatting bio-terrorism. Her responsibilities include researching and implementing procedures in the lab as well as problem solving as issues and unexpected setbacks take place. She and her team will have the opportunity to present their work in poster and oral form in Charlotte, North Carolina, later in the year.

“This experience helped me achieve a better understanding of what I want to do with my career,” says Sass. “This internship has given me invaluable experience with working in a lab setting that was more professional than purely academic.”
