GREENVILLE, S.C. (September 19, 2016) – The Division of Music at Bob Jones University will host a masterclass by cellist Michael Haber on Monday, Oct. 17, 6:30-9:00 p.m. in the Fine Arts building, classroom 224.
“We are excited to feature Mr. Haber in our series of visiting string artists again this year,” said Dr. Michael Moore, conductor of the BJU Symphony Orchestra. “He brings a wealth of experience and artistry to his teaching and playing, and I know our student musicians will be enriched by his visit.”
Haber, a student of Janos Starker and Gregor Piatigorsky, was a member of the Cleveland Orchestra under George Szell, the Casals Festival Orchestra under Pablo Casals and The Mostly Mozart Orchestra at Lincoln Center in New York City. He was the principal cellist of several orchestras, including the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra in Boulder, Colorado. With the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, he toured and recorded throughout Europe, the United States, and Asia.
Haber’s chamber music career includes international tours as the cellist of The Composers Quartet, in residence at Columbia University in New York, cellist of The Gabrielli Trio for 20 years with violinist James Buswell and pianist Seth Carlin, and numerous appearances at music festivals and concert series throughout the United States.
In 2012, Haber made a trip to Australia and New Zealand, presenting masterclasses and lessons at major universities in both countries. In January 2013, he was a participant at the Akaroa International Music Festival in New Zealand.
Haber graduated with high academic honors from Brandeis University with a degree in European History. He did his graduate work at Harvard and Indiana University. He has been on the cello and chamber music faculties of Oberlin College, Indiana University, New England Conservatory of Music, Eastman School of Music, and Boston University.
Participants of the masterclass will include students of Dr. Yuriy Leonovich (BJU music faculty), Mr. Brandon Ironside (BJU music faculty), Mrs. Dianne Pinner (BJU music faculty), Dr. Brenda Leonard (North Greenville University strings instructor) and Ms. Kathy Foster (Converse College cello instructor). The event is free and open to the community. Parking is available in the parking garage behind Rodeheaver Auditorium and on campus streets.
Haber is one of several artists and pedagogues presenting masterclasses at BJU throughout the year. Others include David Kim, concertmaster of The Philadelphia Orchestra, and violinist Alana Carithers of the Richmond Symphony.
